Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)

Periodontal diseases are infections that affect the tissues and bone that support teeth. Left untreated, periodontal diseases may eventually lead to tooth loss. Warning signs of this disease include: gums that bleed easily, red, swollen, or tender gums, persistent bad breath, and loose or separating teeth. During your dental checkup, the dentist examines your gums using a periodontal probe that is gently used to measure the depth that the gum is falling away from the tooth. Patients who experience gum disease can be treated with a product available through professional dental offices that will reduce gum inflammation, control bleeding gums, help reduce sensitivity, aid in remineralization and provide protection from tooth decay. (PerioMed) The laser can often be used to treat the problem area which often prevents the need for periodontal surgery. Some gum disease requires that we use a special deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planning (SRP) to remove plaque buildup and bacteria from infected areas. During this procedure, we may apply an antibiotic. (ARESTIN) This antibiotic helps fight the infection, allowing your gums to heal.
